INTERVIEW & EVENT: Ayo | One Mic

Short. Sharp. Facts!

Name: Ayo
Birthplace: Lagos, Nigeria
Lives: South East London
Promotion Name: We Plug G.O.O.D Music

Q&A

ONiT! caught up with Ayo of We Plug G.O.O.D Music in the run up to their next showcase event, One Mic…UnWrapped...

Who makes up We Plug G.O.O.D Music Team?
I (Ayo) run the We Plug G.O.O.D Music website (www.wepluggoodmusic.com) and the We Plug G.O.O.D Music event team that puts on the show, in conjuction with the dMp, alongside my colleague, Nifemi, in the US who deals with sourcing acts from the States for our website features. We also have a spin off showcase in Lagos, Nigeria, by the same name organised by another colleague, Osagie who also serves as African Music content provider for our website.

How long has One Mic been running now?
Since August 2009

How often does the show
take place?
Bi-monthly

Can you tell us what inspired you to create One Mic?
The main thing was that the website/blogs had been running for a few months and there were many UK acts who we showcased online, which I felt were being limited by only being showcased online, so I spoke to Femi Mode of The dMp and we decided to collaborate to put on a live showcase in addition to We Plug Good Music just promoting these artists via the internet.

The acts aren’t mainstream, that’s not our
thing. We’re really about emerging music so the main idea behind the show is that you may have read about the artists on the website and maybe heard some of their work, but that the showcase is your real opportunity to hear them live and for the artists to build a fanbase and a following.

One Mic simply boasts a platform where new and emerging acts can showcase their work and talent to people that may or may not have heard them, but who will appreciate their art.

What would you say have been the greatest challenges in putting on a regular event like One Mic?
It can be difficult when you’re on a certain wavelength, when you can see a particular vision but no one else is on that same page. It’s quite hard to pull people into the same direction, for them to see what it is that you see. Mixing the event with work, studying and the websites, the organisation is quite wide. The showcase event is only one part of what we do, you know? When you mix all of that up, and if you don’t have everyone on the same page, it can become difficult.

On another level, some acts can be quite diva like [laughs]. For example, one snag that we have is that we have 12 acts, they’ve all been hand-picked to compliment one another and the show, with specific attention paid to who will start and end the show. The opening and closing acts can be very difficult to schedule, artists never want to go first! It’s hard work. The artists are generally booked on an even keel so to get around it, we’ve invited an act who doesn’t mind
going first, with the specific point of opening the show because no one else wanted to go first!

I love new, emerging music, not mainstream crap! That’s my own personal main drive for putting on the show – I’m not a traditional ‘Promoter’, so I am focused on the talent side of the show, not so much the promotion side of it. I think that possibly in the future, we may have to source funding, because some acts don’t want to perform for free, despite it being a showcase and issues arise because we don’t run the show as a profitable business, we don’t run One Mic for a financial gain. We do it for the love of the art and for the sake of the artists; that we can help them to make it and get where they want to be.

What is so great about the venue, Elixir Bar? What was your motivation behind using it?
The main thing is that the bar is quite cosy, it has a great intimate feel to it. It also comes with full sound equipment and a Sound Engineer, which is a massive help. The venue has a great, live sound in it, which obviously helps the show. When you hear the band play, it’s criss, it’s got that raw, live feel to it and you know you’re hearing quality sound.

Ultimately, what would you like to achieve with One Mic?
To keep the show as a platform for emerging artists. I think that with new UK acts, for that breaking sound that’s on the verge of crossing over, there are industry nights/events especially for them. They’re on the road to being mainstream, and those type of nights are on the way to being mainstream too. But whilst that is great, we don’t want that for One Mic – that’s not the reason behind the showcase, I reckon One Mic might just be the transitionary showcase that will lead to these artists getting on those industry nights/events. The reason is to keep the acts as emerging talent, you know, artists who aren’t already getting major airplay, but ones who are enthusiastic about performing even though they aren’t necessarily on their way to being signed in the very near future - but possibly later down the line. We want to show them at their core, unrefined, undiluted talent.

We want to get the acts to be heard by as many ears as possible, t
hat’s our long-term goal. That’s why we try to keep in touch with the acts that we showcase, play them on our radio show and maintain a connection with them, in order for them to build their fanbase and keep up momentum.

How did the name One Mic come about?
I just thought it was cool! I’m not a huge fan of Nas cos Jay-Z is my man! [laughs] But in terms of the showcase, all I could hear in my mind was Nas’ One Mic. When these acts start up, when they first start performing, they’ll take anything, they’re just hungry for it, they just want to perform, do their thing and smack it, so all they really need is one mic!

Are there any artists that you’ve featured, who you particularly enjoyed or who stick in your mind?
Right now, I think UK wise, or the ‘scene’ wise, Spoken Word is going to go far. From the first showcase that we did last year, we had a lady called Holly McNish, who is playing Glastonbury 2010, which is massive! I think she was great. Also, Spoken Word wise, we had G.R.E.E.D.S, an amazing artist in his own right.

We had Chockz the Rapper. I think UK Rap/Hip Hop is really hard to crack, but with him, and the right team, if he keeps doing what he’s been doing he will definitely go far. Shadez the Misfit, he i
s doing big things; he’s on the Cordless Show and the Evo Room on Channel Four.

A Singer at our most recent show, Lilly Mckenzie, she was awesome, her set was really great. Shean Williams is dope too and a lady by the name of Shanaz Dorsett. These are artists that I hear and I think, soon, their time is coming soon.

What can the audience expect on the night when they come to One Mic?
What you get at One Mic is good, proper, live, MUSIC! All acts are backed by a live four piece band, so if you like your live music, this is where you need to be.

This show coming up also (25th April), we had to book Travis Jay again, he’s just too funny. From the last show that he did for us, we’ve had so much positive feedback asking for him to come back, so we’re bringing him back. There’s also spoken word from Ross Taker (Rum Punch 'Punch' Champion - February 2010) & Ms*Starry, for all the spoken word connoisseurs. Great music, stuff that you don’t hear out there, spoken word and comedy - that’s the main core plus you can catch the likes of emerging UK Emcee, AKS (in his 1st post-Cordless Show Live performance since winning that competition), Soul-singers Belle and Ashleigh Ashley plus so much more. If you love music, you will have a great time, it’s just that plain and simple.

The next showcase, One Mic - Unwrapped, will take place on Sunday 25 April followed by 27 June, both at Elixir Bar in London.

INTERVIEW: JJ | Jah-Dean Dance Group

Q&A

ONiT! is excited to see that you're on the line up for Love…Sex…Sensuality…, the forthcoming celebration of all things sensual. We’d love to hear your answers on the following:

Can you tell us how you got involved in this exciting new show?
I was approached by Richard of Free Street Entertainment, who told me that a promoter had seen us performing at Will E. Robo’s show at the Hackney Empire and was interested in using us. I gave him (the promoter) a call and he told us he liked what we did at the show and wanted to use us for a show that he was organising so that’s how it came about really.

How long have your dance troupe been peforming together?
This is actually a recent thing as I’ve just created an agency with a friend of mine. The agency is called Jah Dean Entertainment, out of that came the dance group. It’s probably been about a year now, our first show was the Will E. Robo show at the Hackney Empire.

Basically the dance group stemmed from a fashion show that my friend was doing with her clothing line, Jah Dean clothing, she wanted dancers for it as well so we wore her clothes and we thought we would start a group because it was so effective and different. It’s very abstract and creative. All the clothes are handmade and tailored for the dancers the costumes we will be wearing for the show (Love...Sex...Sensuality...) are brand new amazing designs, specifically for the show and the shows subject, it’s quite exciting really.

Who/what would you cite as your dance influences?
To be fair I don’t have a specific dance influence just because it’s not only dance that I do, I also do musical theatre. I have wondered who it is that influences me or that I look up to and there’s no one specific but more so it’s what it’s about, and the feeling I get from performing - the buzz I get. It’s moreso my love for the area of performing that drives me and inspires me to do it.

I love everything and do everything I’ve changed from street to contemporary, tap to salsa; I’ve done quite a range of styles and I’m still learning more stuff. It’s seen in our work as a group as well. I’m the lead choreographer but the entire group has creative input and support each other. We all specialise in different styles, tap, ballet, contemporary, so we try to fuse that.

Is there any artist(s) who you would particularly like to perform with
?
Wow, that’s a hard one! There are so many great artists out there. In relation to dance specifically I would probably say, at the moment, Lady GaGa. She is so creative and I think with such a creative artist the performance would have to mirror that, so I can only imagine what the performance would be like. It would great to be a part of something so different, so out there. She’s amazing.

How would you describe your dance/performance style?

I would describe it as a fusion of different styles. That’s the only way I could describe it, I mean we have a bit of street in there, some contemporary stuff, a bit of jazz and more abstract stuff. It’s a fusion of as many styles as we can fit in and there is always room to change things up so it might get a bit more abstract. I didn’t want it to be named as any particular thing, I wanted it to be outside of everything.

Everything from the costumes, to the make-up, reflect diversity even the dancers themselves, who are a range of races, reflect that diversity and I want that to be reflected in all elements of the performance.

In order to fully love and appreciate the love of another, we know that you must first love yourself. How would you define self-love? Feeling secure within yourself, respect for yourself and being appreciative of who you are, it’s the first thing you can do before showing affection to anyone else.

What can the audience expect from you on the night?

Oooh, expect a lot of energy and hopefully what we portray has some kind of relevance, so what you see is in some way, shape or form, something you’ve experienced or can recognise within yourself.

Is there a particular piece you are looking forward to performing at Love…Sex…Sensuality…?

Yes, funnily enough we have based the (dance) piece on a poem a friend of mine has written which covers those areas. It’s a poem by Damilola K Fashola called ‘Dry On My Skin’.

What poem/film/song says 'Love...Sex...Sensuality…' to you?

Song:
A song that comes to mind is Floetry ‘Say Yes’, that to me would reflect love, sex and sensuality.

Complete these sentences:

Love is...a journey.
Sex is...an emotion.
Sensuality is...
an artform.

What other performances/projects do you have coming up?

In regards to the agency we’ll be doing the second Will E. Robo show at the 02, and at the minute, that’s it.

We’ll be taking a break as I have exams but then after that I’m sure there’ll be plenty of other projects coming up.

You can see and hear Jah-Dean Dancers perform live, at Love…Sex…Sensuality… on Saturday 24th April.

Birthplace: Leytonstone, East London
Lives

Poetry Deb
ut: Poetry debut in 1999 at Soul Food.
Awards/Achievements: Read one of his books on MTV Base in 2001

ONiT! caught up with Mr. Oh over the phone, whilst he took a bath!

Q&A

ONiT! is excited to see that you're on the line up for Love…Sex…Sensuality…, the forthcoming celebration of all things sensual. We’d love to hear your answers on the following:

Can you tell us how you got involved in this exciting new show?
I released ‘Little Black Book’ recently and the Promoter for
Love…Sex…Sensuality… attended the launch. He said he really enjoyed the performance of a poem entitled I hate you, which was re-enacted from the book. He asked if I’d be interested in recreating the enactment at LSS and I said yeah!

How long have you been writing?
For about 12 years now. The stories for Little Black Book, were written between ‘98-‘01

Are they based on personal experiences?
No, I wasn’t active in that sense at that age. They’re based on fiction; stories that arose from my imagination, whilst listening to old skool tunes – Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder. The first things that came to mind, I wrote about, some of which will be coming out in
Little Black Book 2 and 3.

When are you planning on releasing Little Black Book 2?
June or July 2010, with the 3rd in October, in time for Black History Month.

Who would you cite as your influences?

I’m a sponge ki
nd of person, so many things influence me. Dennis Rodman, for his individuality, Eric Jerome Dickey, because many of his stories can be flipped, i.e. set in Stratford or wherever. UK people can relate. Reading his work makes you question what you like.

What is your favourite Eric Jerome Dickey story?
Genevie was a good one, Milk in my Coffee too, but Cheaters was the best one for me. I read it on my way back from the US and it made me realise ‘I can write!’, it was such a good story, but to put in the London community, that I live in, that people I know live in, and to show a UK audience what’s possible and show US audiences that we can do this too, is really relevant to me.

How would you describe your style as a Writer?

Engagingly rela
tive. I really love to write. I’m glad that it’s getting the response that I like. Even when there are moments that I don’t feel that I can.

If you
could collaborate with another Artist/Writer, who would it be and why?
There’s an East London Writer, Lexy Harper, who also writes erotica, I’d like to collaborate with her. She writes really, really well – very sexy.

What do your Parents think of Little Black Book, and your writing in general?
My Dad doesn’t really know – he’s old skool Nigerian. The other novels that I wrote under my other name, he was really happy with, but I haven’t really told him about LBB. My Mum though, she knows about it. I had to look her in the
eye and explain this is THE book… she asked “What’s it about?” I explained that it’s erm… about people having sex in London. Her face said “Hmmm, my Son is a pervert!” [heavy Nigerian accent] but she didn’t say that. She actually asked me for a copy the other day.

Did you give her a copy?
I changed the subject! (laughs)

In order to fully love and appreciate the love of another, we know that you must first love yourself. How would you define self-love? Knowing that you’re important enough to do the things that you want to do. For me, it took me a while to be confident enough to put out these types of stories and have the response… someone called me the Piped Piper of Pussy the other day… (laughs). I’ve been getting emails from people telling me that they’ve had to take a break from the stories, to get better acquainted with themselves! That’s the response I was looking for, so I’m happy. A lady told me she read it, and the following weekend, she threw her boyfriend down in a different kinda way! Let's just say she was inspired!

Are any subjects taboo to you in your writing?
No.In LBB 2, I plan to get interacial and homosexual...

What advice would you give to a wannabe Writer?
Life is too sh
ort to not do it! If you sit and watch, and think ‘I could do that’, you’ll loose the drive to want to do it eventually, unless you act on it.

What can the audience expect from you on the night?

Hmmm… smooth poetry, inspired by the Little Black Book.

Is there a particular piece you are looking forward to performing at Love…Sex…Sensuality…?
Yes, I am going to do a special performance/interpretation of my story entitled ‘I Hate You’.

What poem/film/song says 'Love...Sex...Sensuality…' to you?

Book: The Little Black Book
Song: Com
e live with me Angel by Marvin Gaye
Film: Romeo & Juliet - the remake with Leonardo di Caprio, it’s such a sexy film.

Complete these sentences:

Love is...you and me.
Sex is...what you want it to be.
Sensuality is...
knowing how to make it right.

What other performances/projects do you have coming up?

Little Black Book 2 and 3 later this year plus a UK Tour with LBB too.

Where can we purchase a copy of Little Black Book?
Amazon
Play.com
WHSmith

Waterstones

Also coming soon to:
CD Bar - Stratford, London
Kin Books – Stratford, London.

Anything else you'd like to let the masses know?
Yes! Little Black Book; open your eyes, minds and thighs!

You can see and hear Mr. Oh perform live, at Love…Sex…Sensuality… on Saturday 24th April.

INTERVIEW: Comfort - Art without Apology | Spoken Word Artist

Short. Sharp. Facts!

Name: Comfort | Art without Apology
Birthplace: Middlesex
Lives

Poetry Deb
ut: An art exhibition by Naptali, a Jamaican artist/painter, Brixton, July 2007
Awards: Word4Word Slam Winner – August 2009; recently published (Mini Me) in current issue of Ninety-Nine Magazine (the No.1 for Black Achievers) and published (Unsatisfied) in Juice Magazine in 2008.

Q&A

ONiT! is excited to see that you're on the line up for Love…Sex…Sensuality…, the forthcoming celebration of all things sensual. We’d love to hear your answers on the following:

Can you tell us how you got involved in this exciting new show?
The promoter contacted me with a view to getting involved and I snapped up the opportunity.

How long have you been performing Poetry/Spoken Word?
I’ve been performing spoken word for nearly three years now and I can’t believe it’s gone so quickly!

Who would you cite as your influences?

They vary really, but if we’re specifically talking about Poets, then I’d have to say FLOetic Lara – she is very inspiring, talented and the fact that can she can spit poetry AND sing… She’s just too much! LOL Kat Francois (the host on the night) is also a massive inspiration to me – personable, hardworking and always pushing herself that extra mile, which makes me want to do more, be better and excel. My earliest influence has to be my Mum! She has always written poems, in greeting cards, on paper, wherever. Mum can write a poem in a few minutes and brighten up your day for hours.

How would you describe your style as a Performance Artist?

I’d describe my style as Art without Apology. It’s direct, it’s honest, and sometimes harsh; the kind of stuff that people think, but wouldn’t necessarily say out loud. I’m not afraid to speak my mind and so I do so, unapologetically.

In order to fully love and appreciate the love of another, we know that you must first love yourself. How would you define self-love?
For me, I would define self love as appreciating yourself, your quirks, your idiosyncrasies, listening to your body and responding to it accordingly; if you’re tired, sleep! If you feel run down, take time! If you’re hungry, eat! Sounds silly, but I think at lot of us get caught up in the rat race and neglect ourselves without a second thought and sadly, I’m one of those people, way too often.

What can the audience expect from you on the night?

The audience can expect unwavering, expressive honesty; about love, sex and maybe even a little sensuality :)

Is there a particular piece you are looking forward to performing at Love…Sex…Sensuality…?

I may perform a new erotic piece, just because I can. It’s not often you get the opportunity on the stage to be so free, so I’m looking forward to utilising that freedom.

What poem/film/song says 'Love...Sex...Sensuality…' to you?
Hmmmm, Poem/song – Jill Scott’s ‘He Loves Me’ Lyzel in E Flat. That song is emosh! It encapsulates all of those emotions in one. I can’t think of a film though….nope, definitely can’t think of a film.

Complete these sentences:

Love is...all consuming, all encompassing, unconditional and often irrational

Sex is...
the best de-stressor on the market!

Sensuality is...
being sat between your mans legs as he gives you a head/scalp massage…ooohhhh weeeee!

What other performances/projects do you have coming up?

I’m working on a few events of my own with ONiT! over the coming months, so keep your eye out for our logo :)

Q&A

ONiT! is excited to see that you're on the line up for Love…Sex…Sensuality…, the forthcoming celebration of all things sensual. We’d love to hear your answers on the following:

Can you tell us how you got involved in this exciting new show? I was doing a show with a wonderful group of women called WILDE (Women into Literature, Development and Enterprise), who are a Women’s writing and poetry group, WILDE do a lot of student support work and writing workshops that look at women’s issues. I was taking part in a show that looked at Black women’s sensuality, it was kind of a black women’s version of the Vagina Monologues, called ‘Sensually Yours’. The organiser of ‘Love...Sex...Sensuality’ saw me in the show and invited me to perform.

How long have you been performing Poetry/Spoken Word?
I Debuted in Atlanta early 90’s so I’ve been performing over 15 years now. I’d spent a bit of time in the States and Atlanta had a great creative arts festival. I was invited to perform at Spellman College, which is a prestigious all black women’s College in Atlanta and it was the first place I performed. For me it was a really comfortable performance, really well received. I think as an outsider with an accent they were more than interested to hear me perform. It was easier to perform over there I think because nobody knew me. I’d always been involved in writing, especially music in England because London was a creative hub with people like Loose Ends and Total Contrast at that time, but I wasn’t really involved in performing. When I came back to England after performing in Atlanta I decided to start sharing my work, I gained a lot of confidence from the reception I’d had in the States.

Who would you cite as your influences?
Obviously as a writer Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni and Zora Neale Hurston who wrote ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ are really influential to me. Musically I would say Stevie Wonder as a lyricist as well as Steely Dan and Michael Franks who are different in terms of genre but still really influential for me as a writer and composer. On a more ‘Roots’ level the Abyssinians and the whole Lovers Rock movement is definitely influential to my sound. Basically I take from all of who we are, the hybrid of musical and lyrical influences in the UK., including genres from the U.S. and Caribbean.

How would you describe your style as a Performance Artist?
Often I’ve been described as the cusp of poetry and song which I think is a good description. My work is where the two meet, as there is always a melodic element to my poetry, but it is always poetry as it can stand alone on the page without music For me the music enhances the themes of my poetry. I compose the music, it is all tailor written for each piece so it means that I don’t ever feel restricted. I use fusions of rock, jazz and roots music when I’m composing so I’ve always been difficult to categorise in the music industry.

In order to fully love and appreciate the love of another, we know that you must first love yourself. How would you define self-love?
Acceptance is the key I think. It’s a cliché, but you have to learn to accept the things you can’t change about yourself and learn to love them. Those things are the unique points about you and that in itself is a reason to love them, their uniqueness. This approach is then extended to loved ones whom you also accept ‘warts and all’

What can the audience expect from you on the night?
Expect to be moved.

Is there a particular piece you are looking forward to performing at Love…Sex…Sensuality…?
Yeah, it’s called ‘Inside Of Who You Are’ it looks at self love and how real love is about loving who you are inside.

What poem/film/song says 'Love...Sex...Sensuality…' to you?
‘Evergreen’ by Barbra Streisand. As a songwriter it’s a song that you wish you had written and when I think about love it says it all.

Complete these sentences:

Love is...Acceptance
Sex is...A Physical exclusive Sensuality is...Succulent

What other performances/projects do you have coming up?
I’m about to go to South Africa, I’ve been before so I’m looking forward to that and I’ve also recently got involved in writing a soundtracks. I’ve been involved in writing and composing the title track for a film called ‘Motherland’ the film company are based in South Africa. The film will be out soon so I’ll be promoting that. I’m also working on the new Poppy Seed album which will be called ‘Cool Lab Oration’ I’m working with lots of different people hence the name, I’ll be releasing it in 2011 as 11 is my number, I was born on the 11th day of the eleventh month so I think 2011 is the perfect time to release it.

You can see and hear Poppy Seed perform live, at Love…Sex…Sensuality… on Saturday 24th April.
